Trim the wick before every burn, let the first burn go long enough for the wax to melt right out to the edge, and keep it out of drafts. Those three things do most of the work.

Tunneling is when the candle burns a narrow hole down the middle and leaves wax stuck to the sides. It comes from short first burns. Let the first burn run until the melted wax reaches the edge of the jar.
